AURANGABAD, SEPTEMBER 3—All India Muslim Ittehadul Muslimineen (AIMIM) MP from Aurangabad Imtiaz Jaleel was detained by the police while he was on his way to Shahganj Mosque in the city to offer ‘Namaz’ on Wednesday.
Jaleel had issued an ultimatum to the state government regarding reopening of temples and mosques in the state and had himself offered to open both places of worship with public support.
Earlier on Tuesday, Jaleel was scheduled to open the Khadkeshwar temple with public support but was persuaded by the administration not to do so after which he agreed and decided to take up the opening of mosque in Shahganj on Wednesday.
Jaleel was detained and brought to Police Commissioners office where he addressed the media. After he was taken into custody, a large number of his supporters belonging to Hindu and Muslim communities raised slogans for his release after which he let off.
“Such incidents will increase till the state government does not allow the people of all faiths to worship in their respective religious places. We want to awaken the government that all places have opened, then why not the religious places. My objective is that the places of worship must open as per the sentiments of the people,” he said.
Aurangabad Police Commissioner Chiranjeev Prasad said, “We have detained him and apprised him of the new guidelines of the state regarding social distancing and other health related guidelines,” he said.
“We have made Jaleel aware about the fresh guidelines issued by the state government. We will act if need be in future,” he said.
