NEW DELHI—In a bizarre development, Aligarh Muslim University has terminated the services of DR. Azeem Malik, temporary chief medical officer of the Jawahalal Nehru Medical College Hospital.
While none of the university officials could be contacted despite several efforts, sources close to Dr. Azeem said that the reason for his termination was his statements to the Indian Express on October 5 in which he had contradicted the UP police version of the Hathras gang rape and murder case.
While Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar in his statement had ruled out rape on the Dalit women based on the report he had received from the forensic science laboratory, Dr. Malik had told The Indian Express that forensic report had no evidentiary value as samples were collected 11 days after the incident.
He had told The Indian Express that the rape can be confirmed if the samples are collected within 96 hours of the incident. “The rape could not be confirmed from the samples because it was collected after 11 days of the incident”, Dr. Malik told mediapersons. The Dalit girl remained admitted for 14 days in the AMU hospital before being shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
Two other CMOS, according to AMU sources, are also likely to be terminated to cover the termination of Dr. Malik.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kafeel Khan has expressed shock and dismay over the termination of Dr. Malik and has appealed Indian Medical Association to come in defence of Dr. Malik.
