WPI for 5 % quota for Muslims in govt jobs in Maharashtra

MUMBAI—Maharashtra unit of the Welfare Party of India has demanded that Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray give 5 per cent reservation to Muslims in government jobs with a view to improving their representation in government departments and uplifting their socio-economic conditions.

WPI(Maharashtra) president Sheikh Saleem has written a letter to Maharashtra Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik, drawing his attention towards this issue.

Sheikh said that this was urgently needed because Muslims, as per Sachar Committee report, were more backwards than Dalits in Maharashtra. He said that even Shiv Sena-NCP alliance, in their election manifesto, had promised 5 per cent reservation in government jobs. Even Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on various occasion, have also spoken in favour of 5 per cent for Muslims in government employment in Maharashtra.

“Muslim representation in government job is very low. Correct figures will be available if caste-based survey of government employees is conducted and reported”, Sheikh said in his letter.

“Muslim representation in government job is extremely low and it is witnessed only when one visits Mantralaya(secretariat), collector and tehsildar offices”, he said.

“In IAS and IPS, Muslim representation is not as per population of the community. As a  result, we see lot of discrimination against Muslims in all sectors”, he pointed out in the letter.

He said that if a section of the society remained backward, it was the responsibility of the state government to provide it enough opportunity so that the community did not remain backward.

WPI president said that though Muslims accounted for 14 per cent of total population of the state, their representation in state assembly was not as per share of their population. This, he said, was because of the present electoral system that made it difficult for Muslims to get elected in assembly and parliamentary polls.

He also drew attention of the minister towards encroachment of wakf land. He appealed him to develop a fast track system to get back the encroached land.
