NEW DELHI—Former Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) chairman Dr Zafarul Islam Khan has said that National Investigation Agency (NIA) is targeting him because of his work in the DMC, especially the report on Northeast Delhi riots.
The report that exposed the alleged connivance of the police with the mob attacking the Muslims, was widely covered by national and international media.
The report brought a bad name to the Narendra Modi government as the Delhi police is directly under the Central government with Modi as Prime Minister.
While Delhi police findings stated that the provocative speeches delivered by BJP leader Kapil Mishra had no role in instigating the Northeast Delhi riots between February 23-27, the DMC’s fact-finding report released on July 16 claimed that “the violence in different parts of Northeast Delhi broke out almost immediately after the instigating speech of Shri Kapil Mishra on February 23 at Maujpur”.
DMR report had also sought a “probe into the complicity and abdication of duty by the Delhi police in allowing violence to take place, including culpability for engaging in direct acts of violence”.
The commission’s report also claimed that the police at many places abetted with the rioters attacking Muslims and destroying their properties, while the police have all along been saying that cops were not involved in abetment of violence.
The DMC’s report also claimed that “the violence was planned, organised and targeted”, and not a “spontaneous” one like a “riot” as was claimed by the police.
Dr. Khan, on Friday, strongly denied the NIA allegations that his NGO-Charity Alliance-is funding terror organisations in Kashmir. “It is a Himalayan lie”, he tweeted from his official twitter handle.
“Apart from some relief work like sending medicines, blankets and giving some very small monetary help to flood victims in 2014, we have no work worth mention in Kashmir”, he said.
“No contacts with militants, no visit to the valley since the last many years. They are trying to penalise me for my work in Delhi Minorities Commission, especially the report on NE Delhi riots”, he stated.
He said that “raids are related to BJP’s dwindling chances in Bihar elections. Today’s papers say the raids are in preparation for the forthcoming FATF (Financial Action Task Force) meeting. Every move by BJP is well-planned and choreographed”. FATF is a global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog and this inter-governmental body sets international standards that aim to prevent these illegal activities and the harm they cause to society.
He alleged that the raids were also a proof of the ‘Godi media’ and government collaboration. “When no one had inkling of the raid, we were locked in our home, our lane was blocked from both ends, no journalist was allowed in, Republic TV van was parked outside my house. Thanks to people’s resistance, Arnab’s foot soldiers fled”, he stated.
