SRINAGAR—Trouble is mounting for Republic TV owner Arnab Goswami after his leaked WhatsApp chats with former CEO of the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) Partho Dasgupta allegedly exposed the nexus between the government and the media.
The purported chats are a part of a supplementary chargesheet submitted by Mumbai police in the TRP scam. The chats have revealed that Arnab had prior information about the strikes against Pakistan post-Pulwama attack on February 14, 2019.
Forty CRPF men were killed when Jaish-e-Mohommad suicide bomber Adil Dar rammed his explosive-laden ECCO van into the convoy on the Srinagar Jammu national highway at Lethpora.
On February 27, Indian Air force jets crossed LoC and bombed Jaish-e-Mohammad training camps in Balakote, Pakistan.
Here are some of the chats between Arnab Goswami and Parto Dasgupta.
Arnab Goswami: On another note, something big will happen
AG: No, sir. Pakistan. Something major will be done this time.
AG: It is good for big man in this season.
PDG: He will sweep polls then…strike? Or bigger?
AG: Bigger than a normal strike. And also, at the same time, something major on Kashmir. On Pakistan the Government is confident of striking in a way that people will be elated. Exact words used.
PDG: Hmm…Invitation to (visit) Kashmir. Shouldn’t go?
AG: Sushma is going to OIC on 2nd March. That means nothing till then.
(The Balakot strike took place on February 26 and developments in Kashmir had to wait till August)
FEBRUARY 26, 2019
AG: Aajtak has lost it. Blacked out PM today.
PDG: What happened?
AG: End of the channel. Aajtak cannot be number 1. Blacked out Modi on a day Modi…Modi…Modi…Modi all over.
PDG: I could see -he was on all other screens.
AG: They also carried fake Pak propaganda video
PDG: Really? That Pak General one? Some 12 channels got notices. Same one ?
FEBRUARY 27, 2019
PDG: Was yesterday’s air-strike the ‘big one’ you spoke about? Or something more coming?
AG: More to come. One Pak F-16 crashed—one Indian also.
PDG: You should embed some reporters—would be a coup like CNN in Iraq.
AG: Where our plane was down, they haven’t left Srinagar and we are live from Budgam.
AUGUST 2, 2019
AG: Government of India to make Jammu a separate state, Kashmir and Ladakh as Union Territories…means can’t have any political party, and will be controlled by Delhi based Governor for ever. Order in next one week. Curfew will be imposed two days ahead of order. It will automatically abrogate Article 370 and 35 A.
PDG: Big one
AG: Sir, I have set Platinum standards in breaking and this story is ours. Meeting NSA and PMO Monday
(The announcement was made in Parliament on August 5 and the Prime Minister, who met a National Conference delegation on August 2, denied any such plan)
AUGUST 5, 2019
AG: Operation Kashmir. Live updates from Ground Zero with 10 reporters across J & K…Republic Bharat is getting live updates on situation in the Valley from 6.12 am
PDG: Not understanding—just increasing number of policemen in front of Omar and Mehbooba’s houses—does it mean house arrest? Has any official called it house arrest?
AG: Gazab ka hai din…socho zara
Omar: Hum bhi akele
Mehbooba: Hum bhi akele
Amit Shah: Maza aa raha hai ?
Public: Kasam Se
PDG: Lodha Developers moves in…Kashmir is now renamed as Upper Haryana
PDG: Just a suggestion…don’t mix Hindi in English channel. South viewers may start switching out.
AG: Because my first burst of reporters landing in Srinagar were from Bharat…today I was called by NSA and asked how I got the news…Doval met me before taking off for Kashmir.

Congress Working Committee (CWC) has demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the alleged breach of national security, violation of Official Secrets Act over leaked WhatsApp chat of Arnab Goswami.
“It is clear that among those involved are persons in the highest echelons of government and there have been a breach of secrecy concerning vital and sensitive military operations,” CWC said in a resolution.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi criticized what she called the “deafening” silence of the Government. “Those who give certificates of patriotism and nationalism to others now stand totally exposed,” she said.
Congress also launched an all-out attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP saying that it will raise the issue of Arnab Chat Gate in the Parliament.
Meanwhile, former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela has demanded resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on moral grounds the issue and narco test of Arnab Goswami and Partho Dasgupta. Vaghela was once a close associate of Modi when he(Vaghela) was in BJP.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti too has joined the chorus saying Balakote strikes were aimed to benefit a particular party in elections.
“Today we stand vindicated that it was done to benefit a particular party in the elections & not to avenge the martyrs of Pulwama attack,” she said.
Mehbooba noted that national security and issues of monumental importance have been reduced to a TRP ‘tamasha’ that benefits BJP and creates false narratives. “Masses are conditioned to believe fake news, hate imagined enemies within & outside the country. The nation wants to know who will pay the price for this?” she asked.
Grieving kin of Pulwama attack martyrs have also demanded stringent action against Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.
Confederation of Ex-Parliamentary Forces Welfare Association has shot off letters to the President and the Delhi police commissioner demanding “immediate arrest of Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami under the Official Secrets Act for committing treason”.
Ironically, Arnab has also lampooned some of the BJP stalwarts in his chats. Disparaging references were made against Arun Jaitley, Prakash Javadekar, and former minister Rajyvardhan Rathore.
“All ministers are with us,” Goswami said in one of the chats.
After remaining silent for days, BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia said Pulwama martyrs’ sacrifice will not be in vain. BJP leader in press conference lashed out at the opposition and said whosoever is guilty will be punished.
