NEW DELHI—Delhi Police that registered 25 FIRs against 37 farm union leaders in connection with the violence at Red For and other places in the national capital during tractor rally on the Republic Day, have slapped terrorism charges under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) as also sedition charges under Indian Penal Code on them.

The police have also issued lookout notices against farm leaders named in the FIR. Farmer leaders have also been asked to surrender their passports.

A press statement issued by the Delhi police said that the Special Cell is investigating  “the conspiracy and criminal designs behind the unfortunate incidents of January 26, 2021”.

The statement said that “a criminal case has been registered and is being investigated under provisions of the Unlawful Activities(prevention) Act (UAPA) and sections of IPC dealing with sedition”.

According to the statement, “the role and conduct of organization and individuals based in India as well as those out of the country is being probed”. It may be pointed here that the government had earlier said that foreign forces were involved behind the farm protests.

“A preliminary assessment suggests there was a pre-conceived and well-coordinated plan to break the agreement reached between Delhi police and the leaders of farmers organisations, to indulge in violent confrontation with the security forces, to breach the sanctity of iconic and historical structures/monuments and to an international embarrassment for the government on the occasion of the Republic Day”, the Delhi police statement said.
