AHMEDABAD—Lotus has once again bloomed in Gujarat with BJP sweeping Municipal Corporation polls.
Of the 576 seats in six Municipal Corporations, BJP has won 483. Congress got only 55 seats which is less than 10 percent. Congress drew blank in Surat. Congress got only 10 percent seats in Baroda, Surat, and Rajkot Municipal Corporations
Congress will not get the post of leader of the opposition given its poor performance. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) surprised everyone by its stellar performance in Surat Municipal Corporation. AAP won 27 seats in Surat. AAP’s candidate is set to become the leader of the opposition in Surat Municipal Corporation.
Sensing opportunity after Congress’ rout, AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is holding a roadshow in Surat on February 26. AAP is trying to establish itself as an alternative to Congress. The majority of people in Surat are from the Patidar community. The city is known for big industries and business houses.
AAP is using the victory to gain a foothold in Saurashtra. Saurashtra’s Patidars are also residing in Ahmedabad. Muslims might not have liked Kejriwal, but he has a good image among Hindu voters. BJP has a huge influence in urban areas. AAP popularity may give Congress and BJP sleepless nights in the future.
On one side BJP has hit Congress hard and on the other AIMIM has rubbed salt on its wounds. Without any organizational structure, Asaduddin Owaisi led AIMIM contested polls in Ahmedabad and won seven seats. In Gomatipur and Bahrampur wards, the party came at number 2. In Ahmedabad, Congress recorded the victory in Muslim wards. Of the 25 seats won by Congress, 17 are in Muslim majority areas, while eight are in Dalit-populated localities.
In Surat Municipal Corporation, BJP won 93 out of 120 seats. Congress lost all 36 seats won in 2015. AAP won 27 seats and emerged as the main opposition.
BJP won 68 seats in Rajkot Municipal Corporation and Congress got only 4. Congress had won 38 seats in the 2015 polls. They lost 34 seats. Here too AAP got good votes.
For the first time in 15 years, Congress tally has been reduced to a single digit in Baroda. BJP won 69, while Congress won only seven seats. No Muslim has won the seat from Vadodara this time around.
Out of 64 seats, BJP won 50 seats. Congress got 11 and BSP won three seats. AAP drew blank here.
BJP won 10 out of 13 wards in Bhavnagar. Of the 62 seats, BJP won 44 and Congress eight. Here BJP has been ruling since 1995. AAP drew blank here.
On February 28, polls will be held in the rural areas of Gujarat. This poll will set the agenda for national politics. In rural areas, Congress has a firm grip. Results will be announced on March 3.
