NEW DELHI—Ahead of the polls, the BJP has got an egg on its face after a woman, who featured on local newspaper advertisements, nailed its lies about getting a free house under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) in West Bengal.
On February 25, the BJP issued advertisements in major Kolkata dailies wherein a woman was featured alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the description, it was written that she was one of 24 lakh beneficiaries who got free houses under PMAY.
However, the woman nailed the lies of the BJP and claimed that she is living in rented accommodation. Identified as Lakshmi Devi, she said she pays Rs 500 rent for the single room tenement in Kolkata.
Hailing from Bahu Bazar, Devi works as a daily wager. It was claimed that she has become Atama Nirbhar (self-reliant) after getting a roof over her head. But she denied all the claims.
Newslaundry visited the house of Devi and found out a different story. Devi told Newslaundry that she did not get any house. She said she is living in rented accommodation.
Social media went crazy after the woman nailed the lies of BJP. People are now trolling BJP for spreading lies to woo the electorate.
Condemning BJP’s lies, Congress raised questions about the claims made by the government about different schemes. “This is BJP’s model of development. Vikas is only on papers. It (newspaper advt) exposes the PM. They are playing with the sentiments of the people,” the Congress said
Senior Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan said people should learn from Modi Ji how to speak lies. “Modi Ji has issued an advertisement and featured a lady claiming that she along with 24 lakh women got houses. But this woman says the claim is false. Yogi Ji too has learned the art of lying from Modi and issued a fake video of youth getting jobs,” he said.
Some days ago a video was circulated in Uttar Pradesh wherein the government claimed to have provided jobs to lakhs of people. This video was also tweeted from the official Twitter handle of UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath. In the video, a youth was seen praising Yogi for providing him the job.
Later when there was hue and cry, the video was deleted from Yogi‘s twitter handle. The reality was there was no job provided to anyone as claimed by the youth in the video.
Pawan Khera of Congress said it shows the level of UP chief minister. “On the official Twitter handle, youth namely Durgesh Chaudhary is seen thanking the chief minister for the transparent recruitment process in the department. However the reality is that no recruitment has taken place for five years in the department which the youth is talking of,” he said.
AAP too has condemned the BJP for lying to fool the electorate.
