NEW DELHI—Baboo Saifi, son of 72-year-old Abdus Samad Saifi, has said that his father was not involved in preparation and sale of ‘taveez’ (amulets) as claimed by the police.

Abdus Samad was on June 5 allegedly forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’, beaten up badly by about half a dozen people and his beard was also cut off. Samad in a video alleged that it was a case of islamophobia but the Ghaziabad police in its statements to media, later on, claimed that the old man used to sell amulets to help people solve their problems. However, problems of one of the accused persons who bought the amulet, was not solved and hence, what happened with Samad was over a personal dispute.

But Baboo rejected the police claim, alleging that the police version is concocted. He said that his father or family has nothing to do with amulets. “We are Saifis and our traditional business is carpentry. Also, the police claim that Muslims were also involved in assaulting my father is also false. It is unbelievable that a Muslim will cut off the beard which is an identity of Muslims”, said Baboo.

He said that Muslim youths have been booked in the case to give a different twist to the issue.

Baboo also alleged that policemen were not interested when his father was taken to police station to register FIR. He alleged that one of the policemen said that it is good not to keep beard in this scorching summer. He also alleged that police did not write what was told by the victim.
