SRINAGAR—A major political storm has hit Jammu and Kashmir after People`s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti offered prayers at a temple in Poonch.
“There are no double standards. We live in a secular nation known for Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb. Yashpal ji (former MLC of the PDP, who passed away in January last year) had constructed a temple and his son wanted me to see it. The people of Poonch donated generously to the temple, which is very beautiful. Someone gave me a ‘Lota’ (small round shaped vessel) of water piously asking me to pour it (on Shiv lingam), which I did. How could one refuse to oblige,” she told the media.
However, her temple visit has kicked up a storm with BJP linking it with the abrogation of Article 370.
“Mehbooba Mufti offering milk to Lord Shiva in Poonch. This is the change post article 370 rollback. She is the same person who would say nobody will pick up Tiranga if Article 370 is revoked. She is now at the feet of Lord Shiva. indeed a welcome change. Kuch tou zaroor badla hai,” said Altaf Thakur, BJP spokesman.
A cleric of Darul Uloom Deoband, however, has expressed displeasure over Mehbooba Mufti’s purported ‘puja’ at the Navagraha temple in the Poonch district.
Talking to the media, Vice Chancellor of Madrassa Jamia Sheikh-ul Hind, Maulana Mufti Asad Qasmi said Muslims should follow their religion only. “There is no permission as per the Sharia to adopt traditions of other religions,” he said.
He however added that this was not a ‘fatwa’, but his personal view.
“If anyone (Muslim) chooses other religious practices, then it is not appropriate. The country is free, and everyone knows about what is right and wrong,” he added.
Patron of Jamiat Dawat-ul Muslimeen, Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora, said: “Rules of the religion should be followed.”
