Justice Akil Kureshi Recommended as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court

New Delhi, May 13— The Collegium of the Supreme Court has recommended the name of Justice Akil Abdul Hamid Kureshi, popularly known as Justice AA Kureshi, as the new Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Justice Akil Kureshi is the senior-most Judge from the Gujarat High Court and at present is functioning as judge at the Bombay High Court.

“Office of the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court would be falling vacant, very shortly, consequent upon retirement of Mr. Justice S.K. Seth, Chief Justice of that High Court. Therefore, appointment to that office is required to be made. Mr. Justice A.A. Kureshi is the senior-most Judge from Gujarat High Court and at present is functioning, on transfer, in Bombay High Court. Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Mr. Justice A.A Kureshi is suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Collegium re-solves to recommend accordingly,” reads the resolution of the SC collegium signed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde and NV Ramana.

Who is Justice Akil Abdul Hamid Kureshi?

Justice Kureshi comes from Gujarat. The website of the Bombay High Court gives the following brief about him.

He was born on March 7, 1960. He passed B.Sc. (Mathematics) in 1980 and LL.B. in 1983. He joined the Bar and started legal practice in July 1983. He was appointed as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel from March 1992 to March 1998. He was also assigned entire work of Central Administrative Tribunal, Ahmedabad and handled large number of service matters on behalf of the Government. He also handled large number of other matters including Land Acquisition cases, criminal matters and matters pertaining to Passports.

Justice Kureshi was appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court of Gujarat and took charge as such on March 7, 2004 and confirmed as permanent Judge on August 12, 2005. He was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of High Court of Gujarat from November 2, 2018. But he was transferred as a Judge to the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2018.
