New Delhi, 13 May 2014: India’s Egypt Solidarity Forum (ESF) has appealed to all Indian journalists, unions and media outlets, as well as media personalities to express their solidarity with the Al-Jazeera journalists jailed in Egypt.

Al-Jazeera journalists Abdullah Elshamy, Peter Greste, Mohammad Fahmy and Baher Mohammad have been detained by the Egyptian government on charges of supporting terrorism. They have been detained in Egypt for over 130 days.

Abdullah Elshamy, correspondent for Al-Jazeera Arabic has been the longest in detention for 272 days now. He went on hunger-strike due to their ill-treatment and illegal arrest and has been on it for 113 days so far. Amid concerns over his deteriorating health, the journalist has been reportedly moved to an undisclosed location.

The international media has widely condemned the detention and press freedom activists have been raising their voice for the immediate release of all Al-Jazeera journalists. The ESF has called for Indian media organizations and journalists to support them which will be a major support to their struggle for release.
