Geneva/Gaza, 11 Aug 2014: The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on Monday nominated three-member Commission of Inquiry for Israeli military offensive in Palestine particularly Gaza Strip. The panel has been mandated to investigate all violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in the areas since 13 June 2014.

United Nations Human Rights Council had adopted a resolution on 23 July and decided to dispatch an independent, international commission of inquiry to investigate all violations of international humanitarian laws and international human rights law in the occupied Palestinian territory including East Jerusalem particularly in the occupied Gaza Strip, in the context of the military operations conducted since 13 June 2014 when Israel started bombing Gaza Strip. Around 2000 Palestinians mostly civilians have been killed in the aerial bombings and ground operations in Gaza.

“…I have decided to appoint Ms Amal Alamuddin (United Kingdom), Mr. Doudon Diene (Senegal) and Mr William Schabas (Canada/Ireland) as commissioners”, reads a communication from Baudelaire Ndong Ella, President of the Human Rights Council.

Mr William Schabas will act as the Chair of the commission of inquiry.

However, the UN rights body has not fixed any time frame for the probe panel. The press release signed by HRC president Ella does not mention when the panel will start probe, nor has it set any deadline for submission of the investigation report.
