New Delhi, 12 August 2014: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court of India headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha will hear all petitions against ban on Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) on Tuesday. SIMI was first banned in 2001 and in February 2014 the central government imposed 7th ban on it. All bans were challenged by e-members of SIMI. At least eight such petitions are pending before the apex court since 2003.

After every ban on SIMI, the government constituted a tribunal to look into whether or not there are solid grounds against ban. Except the 2008 ban, the tribunals headed by sitting judges of Delhi High Court upheld the government’s decision to ban the SIMI. The tribunal of 2008 headed by Justice Gita Mittal had lifted the ban due to lack of sufficient proofs.

In May 2014 the Chief Justice of Supreme Court had referred the petitions challenging the ban on SIMI to a large bench.
