New Delhi, 30 August 2014: Ambassador of Israel to India Mr. Daniel Carmon during a meeting with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh here on Friday said his country Israel is “looking forward to a meaningful cooperation with India in the area of homeland security.”

India and Israel recently signed bilateral Agreement on Homeland and Public Security, Agreement on Protection of Classified Materials & Information and Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in Criminal Matters. The Israeli envoy said “the agreement is a step further in this direction,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a press statement Friday evening.

The ambassador also invited Home Minister Rajnath Singh to attend the third Israel Homeland Security International Conference and Exhibition to be held in Tel Aviv scheduled in November this year.

Mr. Singh welcomed the ceasefire in Gaza and hoped that it would usher in peace and tranquility in the region that would be beneficial for both the sides. In response the Israeli ambassador said “the first priority of Israel is the reconstruction, rehabilitation and demilitarisation of Gaza so that peace and normalcy return to the region at the earliest.”

During the 50-day Israeli military offensive in Gaza, which Israel says was in response to rocket fires from the Palestinian enclave, more than 2000 Palestinians – mostly women and children – were killed and several lakhs rendered homeless as hundreds of buildings were levelled in fierce bombing and ground operation. Around 70 Israelis – 65 of them soldiers – were also killed in the fight.

Egypt last week brokered a truce between Israel and Hamas.
