Aligarh, 16 Dec 2014: In 58 years of my academic life in Aligarh Muslim University, I have never observed bias against girl students; instead, female students are more protective in this campus, said Prof Shamim Jairajpuri, noted academic and founder Vice Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad. He was addressing the Valedictory function of the two-day ‘North Zone Vice Chancellors Meet here Tuesday.

AMU had hit national headlines last month following an alleged sexist statement of Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah barring undergraduate girls from the varsity’s central Maulana Azad Library. The institute later clarified that women’s college of the varsity has a library exclusive for undergraduate girls and the central library is for senior students and research scholars, and it already has 2100 girl students as members.

Prof Jairajpuri said: “I repeat this again and again that AMU is the safest place for girls and provides every opportunity to them.”

He also said that VC Shah is very keen on developing research in this University and his tenure has provided the students and academics with new opportunities.

Defining research as a never-ending process, Prof Jairajpuri urged academics and students to keep updating their researches and findings and make sure that their work contribute for the betterment of society.

In his presidential speech, AMU VC Shah said: “We offered to host this event because we were sure that the team AMU will swing it and besides using an opportunity to project our problems, we in AMU wanted the rest of the country to know that AMU is a secular and modern Institution.”

He also promised that as the Vice Chancellor, he is committed in providing better research opportunities to academicians and students.

Among the vice chancellors who attended the meet included Vice Chancellor, B R Ambedkar University, Prof M Muzammil, Vice Chancellor, Teerthanker Mahaveer University, Moradabad, Prof Rakesh Kumar Mudgal, Pro Vice Chancellor, Lucknow University, Prof T Usmani, and Prof. Furquan Qamar, Secretary General of Association of Indian Universities.
