Hundreds attend funeral of India’s towering Muslim educationist – Saiyid Hamid

New Delhi, 30 Dec 2014: Hundreds of people took part in the funeral prayer for Saiyid Hamid, former Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University and Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard University here on Tuesday. Hamid, 94, passed away Monday evening at the Majidia Hospital, Jamia Hamdard after a prolonged illness.

Vice President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari, former judge of Supreme Court Markandey Katju, heads of various Muslim organizations and a number of dignitaries including academicians, former judges and activists attended the funeral. He was buried at Panj Peeran graveyard near the shrine of sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin.

“His death is a great loss for the Muslim community in the field of education and social welfare,” said Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, Ameer (national president) of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. His contribution as VC of AMU and his role in developing Taleemabad as Chancellor of Hamdard University will be remembered for long, said Maulana Umari who also attended the funeral of Saiyid Hamid.

The Aligarh Muslim University held a condolence meeting which was presided over Vice Chancellor Lt General (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah. He paid rich tributes to the former Vice Chancellor, Saiyid Hamid saying he was a man of courage, man of wisdom and totally dedicated to the cause of education.

Saiyid Hamid was born on March 28, 1920. He joined AMU to attend Bachelors in Arts in 1937 after completing Intermediate from Mordabad in Uttar Pradesh. He completed Masters of Arts with English literature from AMU in 1941 and M A (Persian) in 1947.

Saiyid Hamid joined as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University on June 10, 1980 and played a key role in stream lining affairs of the University. “He revived the monthly magazine, Tahzeebul Akhlaq, started by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and launched the new Hindi Magazine, Nishant,” said General Shah.

“During his tenure as the Vice Chancellor, Saiyid Hamid formulated policies for the development of the University, which made rapid progress in every field. The third AMU Amendment Act, 1981 was implemented during his vice Chancellorship,” said the AMU VC.
