New Delhi, 06 April 2015: “Senior leaders of the Muslim community from across the country…called on the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today to apprise him of their concerns,” said Prime Minister’s Office in a press statement Monday afternoon and also released some photos of the meeting. Minutes after the photos were posted on facebook, comments have rained – majority of them refusing to identify these ‘senior leaders’ of the community.

It is clear from these comments that majority of Muslims do not appreciate the idea of PM Modi or his BJP to project less known or unknown faces of the community as their senior leaders or representatives.

Just have a look at some of these comments:

“I am unable to identify even a single person as community leader. Who they are?” – Sadullah Saad.

“Who knows….beards and turbans makes them community leaders.” – Seema Mustafa

“Not a single person is well known figure”. – Md Saifuddin

“May be they are from BJP minority wing! Irrelevant and insignificant.” – Shehzad Poonawalla

“This is sorrow saga of Muslims disunity for not having a united forum of leaders every X Y Z they may be respectful but majority of community don’t recognise them! But since this happens suddenly if BJP wants media will make them over night leaders of Muslims where other side those guys with all humiliation will tell but we are common people example Sareshwala!”. – Mohammed Mubashir

“PM Modi seems to be wasting his precious time conversing with some insignificant moulvi-mullahs team, regretfully the government feels these moulviz represents Muslims….
But the truth is none of them is a community leader, leave aside community they don’t even represent a Mohalla or a nukkad ….”- Aziz A Mubarki

However, there are also many who, though do not identify them, appreciate the meeting.

“Nothing wrong in meeting and discussion but these learned people should understand result will be zero from prejudiced PM who appealed for Jats but mum on Muslims!” – Mohammed Mubashir.

“Modi se milna is not an issue at all. And please don’t talk about unity etc. Even if so called Muslim leaders meet him we will indulge in tearing them apart. Poster baaz aur naarebaaz qaum sudhrne waali nhi; koi aur kaam jo nhi.” – Fazlur Rehman

The statement from the PMO says that the Muslim leaders wo met the PM Modi expressed “apprehensions about the trend of increased radicalisation and emerging threat of terrorism, the leaders underlined the need for greater unity and collective efforts to meet the challenge. The leaders brought to the notice of Shri Narendra Modi, issues relating to properties of Muslim shrines, Masjids and Madrassas. They also sought the support of the Government in providing better facilities to Muslim youth particularly in the field of education.”

The Prime Minister assured the delegation to address their grievances and resolve the issues of the Muslim community.

“The Prime Minister gave a patient hearing to the delegation and assured them of his full support in meeting grievances of all sections of the Muslim society. He emphasized the need of empowerment of the Muslim youth to enable them to play a larger role in nation building. He specifically assured the leaders that he will look into their grievances on shrines, Masjid and Madrassas. He further promised his complete assistance in ameliorating their social conditions and addressing their educational requirements.”
