Mumbai, 14 July 2015: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) this morning raided the home and office of activist Teesta Setalvad a week after booking her and her husband Javed Anand for allegedly illegally receiving funds from abroad.

According to NDTV, a team of 16 CBI officers carried out the raids in Mumbai. Ms Setalvad said she did not understand why the raids had been ordered when she had written to the CBI offering full cooperation with their inquiry.

“This is vendetta by the BJP. They are trying to humiliate us,” she told NDTV.

Since the Gujarat riot 2002, Teesta has been fighting for justice for the riot victims. In the post-Godhra train carnage riot, around 2000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in Gujarat then ruled by Narendra Modi as chief minister. In the train carnage, around 60 karsevaks were killed who were returning from Ayodhya.

Last Wednesday CBI had registered a case against Setalvad, Anand and their associate Peshimam Gulam Mohammad for criminal conspiracy and illegal acceptance of foreign contributions for their company, Sabrang Communications and Publishing Pvt. Ltd. (SCPPL).

The three have been accused of diverting foreign funds to SCPPL by violating the provision of the Foreign Contribution and Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010.

A Central Bureau of Investigation official said that the trio has also been booked under various sections of FCRA 2010 and Protection of Civil Rights Act.

“The allegations are of criminal conspiracy for illegal acceptance of foreign contribution without registration and prior permission from the ministry of home affairs,” the official told IANS.
