Cool clock, Ahmed; we should inspire more kids like you to like science: Obama

Washington, 17 Sep 2015: US President Barack Obama has come out to rescue teenaged Ahmed Mohamed and recognize his talent. Two days after the ninth grader Ahmed from Irving in Texas was detained from his school as teachers mistook his own homemade clock for bomb, President Obama invited him to the White House.

“Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great,” tweeted Obama on his official twitter handle @BarackObama at 10:28 pm on Wednesday (16th Sep). The tweet has since been retweeted 370,000 times.

The 14-year-old Ahmed wanted to impress his teachers with his homemade invention. He walked into MacArthur High School on Monday (14th Sep) morning with his hastily assembled device: A digital clock. However, school teachers mistook the device for a bomb and consequently police was called in, and Ahmed was handcuffed and escorted out.

As the story about his detention spread, along with his photo in a NASA T-shirt and handcuffs, a national outrage erupted and he was flooded with support.

Besides Obama, Ahmed has got invitation from Mark Zuckerberg also. The Facebook founder has invited Ahmed to meet him at the social media giant’s California headquarters.

NASA scientists and MIT researchers have also offered tours, along with praise for the teen’s ingenuity.
