PM office reaches out to Urdu poet Munawwar Rana

New Delhi, 22 Oct 2015: In the most significant turn of event in the last two weeks since writers and poets started returning their awards in protest against the growing intolerance in the country, the office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly approached country’s eminent Urdu poet Munawwar Rana who returned his Sahitya Akademi award and cash prize of Rs one lakh during a live TV news program on Sunday.

“Got a call from PM’s office asking me when I want to meet PM. But I suggested that some sahityakars also be called,” ANI news agency quoted Rana as saying one hour ago.

“Then they suggested I pick people from sahityakars but I said I don’t want that responsibility,” Rana claimed.

More than 50 writers and poets have returned their awards and some of them have resigned from their posts at the Sahitya Akademi in protest against attacks on writers and also the growing intolerance in the country.
