IndiaTomorrow.net,New Delhi, Jan 14: The Muslim community looks deeply upset with the change in the government stand over the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University. A prominent Muslim organisation has urged the central BJP government not to change the minority status of about 150-year institution.

Going against the stand of the previous (Congress) government in the Supreme Court case pertaining to the minority character of AMU, the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently decided not to support the minority status of the varsity.

While expressing serious concern at the government’s changed position, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, has termed it “as denial of a great historic fact”. While terming it as “deliberate neglect of the Constitutional rights given to minorities,” Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, Ameer (National President) of Jamaat urged the Modi government to “correct its stand, not to ignore the rightful demand of the country’s largest minority about AMU, and to desist from suppressing their emotions.”

Jamaat leader said Aligarh Muslim University was founded for promotion of education of Muslims. “But first, some unnecessary disputes were created and now attempts are being made to snatch it from the community.”

“If management of one or two of hundreds of universities of the country is left in the hands of Muslims for their educational need, it will benefit the country only,” he said.

Maulana Umari further said that the whole world knows that the university was established by the Muslim minority and “this historic fact cannot be hid or changed through any misleading argument.”

“Open-minded Hindus and justice-loving people will never accept the wrong stand of the government. The government, therefore, should respect the constitutional rights of Muslims like other minorities and keep from altering the minority character of Aligarh Muslim University,” said Jamaat leader.
