New Delhi, Feb 19: Eminent citizens of Delhi have spoken strongly on the JNU row and attack on journalists at Patiala House court. Talking to pressmen, veteran legalist and former union law minister Ram Jethmalani has said the sedition charges against JNU student union president Kanhaiya Kumar are wrong.

“There are better charges to have against the man (Kanhaiya Kumar) but this (sedition) is not the correct charge. Sedition is a different offence altogether. It is an offence against the state if you are advocating violence. He (Kanhaiya) has not advocated violence,” said Jethmalani.

Former chief justice of Delhi High Court Rajendar Sachar said controversial slogans should be probed but the university should not be maligned.

“If some students cried and suppose they raised slogans – it is to be seen how objectionable they are. But what happened at the Patiala House court – is it acceptable? Please don’t destroy JNU. It’s a national institution,” said Sachar.

Mohammad Salim Engineer, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind also said that if the slogans are found anti-India action should be taken against guilty but action should also be taken against those who beat people and journalists at Patiala House court.

“What has been happening in JNU for the past few days is very unfortunate. It is alleged that some students raised anti-India slogans. The allegations should be investigated and if laws demand action, action should be taken by the court. But it has also come to public notice that some other people are raising the anti-India slogans and action has been taken against others,” said Salim Engineer.

“Communal elements and youths affiliated with the ruling BJP are resorting to violence and beating people. It is a very dangerous trend that if some people have views different from you, you would call them anti-national, traitor and if their name is Muslim you call them terrorist. An MLA of BJP and some others have been caught on camera beating people but the government has not taken any action against them,” said he.
