New Delhi, July 31: A high-level delegation of Indian Muslims’ umbrella body visited Gujarat and met Dalit families in Ahmedabad and Una. Four Dalit youths were brutally assaulted by cow vigilantes in Una town of Gujarat earlier this month.

The delegation of All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat (AIMMM), under the leadership of its president Navaid Hamid, met the wounded youths at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and also visited their families in Una, about 450 kms from the state capital.

“We went there to express our sympathy with the victims. We told them that we are with them and our Dalit brothers and we want to share their pain,” Mohammad Ahmed, member of the AIMMM delegation, told IndiaTomorrow.net after returning to Delhi.

“We strongly condemn the attacks on Dalits. The way so-called cow protectors have taken law unto their hand, we feel that the supremacy of law itself is in danger. The law enforcing agencies should not allow such people to violate the law,” said Ahmed, who is also Secretary for National and Community Affairs at Jamaat-e-Islami Hind – one of the several Muslim organizations that are part of AIMMM.

“This is not the first time that cow vigilantes have violated the law. Last year, Mohammad Akhlaq was lynched by a mob in Dadri area of Uttar Pradesh over rumours that he consumed beef,” said he adding that “It is pity that the government is silent on such incidents”.

Another member of the delegation was Maulana Asghar Imam Mehdi, General Secretary of All India Jamiat Ahle Hadees.
