New Delhi, August 10: Facing criticism for unnecessary use of the sedition law, particularly after the JNU incident where students union president Kanhaiya Kumar and some other students were arrested under the provisions of the act, the central government has requested the Law Commission of India to study the provisions of the law and suggest amendments, if any.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has written to the Ministry of Law and Justice to request the Law Commission of India to study the usage of the provisions of the Section 124A (Sedition) of IPC and suggest amendments, if any. The matter is under consideration of the Law Commission of India, said Minister of State for Home Affairs, Hansraj Gangaram Ahir in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

All the JNU students were later released. They were arrested for allegedly raising some anti-India slogans at an event at the campus.
