Hyderabad, Oct 2: The vice chancellor might not have expected it, nor did the audience but when the Dalit research scholar did it, it shocked the VC but the audience stood up with loud cheers.

It was convocation of Hyderabad University on Saturday and Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao Podile, who was surrounded in controversy following the suicide of PhD student Rohith Vemula at a hostel room of the varsity in Jan 2016, was distributing degrees among successful students.

The anchor called Velpula Sunkanna, the PhD scholar, on the stage to receive the degree from the VC. He went up to the stage, came close to the VC and said a few words to him. it appears the VC tried to convince him but he was rigid, and then the VC called Pro-Vice Chancellor Vipin Srivastava, who was sitting on the dais, and Velpula Sunkanna, friend of Rohith and one of the four students suspended along with Rohith last year, received the degree.

The refusal of degree from the VC was captured on camera by one of the audience and uploaded on facebook. It was uploaded at 3:53 pm on Saturday but within 24 hours, the video has been watched by more than 1.35 lakh people.
