New Delhi, Aug 16: Scores of human rights activists, social activists, lawyers, academicians and parliamentarians on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration near at Jantar Mantar near the Parliament House in Delhi over the deaths of children at a government hospital in Gorakhpur – the parliamentary constituency of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. They observed candle light vigil in the memory of the children.

In the last one week, more than 70 children have reportedly died at the state-run BRD Medical College and Hospital in Gorakhpur – some of them allegedly due to shortage of oxygen supply at the hospital.

Speaking to media, Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar Ansari said, “This incident has defamed the country. People of BJP are shameless. BJP’s national president said that in a big country such incidents are common and UP’s health minister said that kids fell ill. Now we need to take pledge to throw out BJP from the power.”

Another protester accused the Uttar Pradesh BJP government and the hospital administration for the incident.

Some protesters were angry over removal of Dr. Kafeel Khan who had saved many children by arranging oxygen cylinders with the help of his friends and private vendors. Protesters raised slaogans against CM Adityanath and BJP.

Adv. Shahid Ali said, “Yogi Adityanath must take the responsibility and resign from his post.”

Prominent human rights activist Dr John Dayal, social activist Devendra Bharti and Dr Manzoor Alam were also present in the candle vigil. The protest was jointly organized by several social groups.
