Rajasthan Local Body By-Polls: Congress Wins 46 Seats, BJP 30

Jaipur, July 2— Twice within a month of the rout in the Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Congress has made an impressive comeback in the local body elections in the state. In the by-polls whose results were announced today (Tuesday), Congress has won 7 out of 9 seats in Zila Parishads. BJP could win just one seat while one seat was won by an independent candidate.

In the by-poll for 74 seats in Panchayat Samitis, the Congress has won 39 seats leaving BJP behind at 29. Six Independent candidates also won.

Commenting on the victory, Rajasthan Congress president and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot congratulated the winners of the party. “The public has once again posed faith in Congress,” he tweeted.

On June 12, when results of by-polls for 16 seats in Nagar Palikas/Nagar Parisahds, Congress emerged victorious on 8 seats and BJP on 5 seats. Three Independent candidates had also won – two of them were backed by Congress.

In the April-May Lok Sabha elections this year, BJP won all 25 seats in the state, just repeating its performance of 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
