JNU Violence: Delhi Police Registers FIR

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 6—The Delhi Police that received several complaints in connection with Sunday’s violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, filed a single FIR on Monday.

It was confirmed by Delhi police spokesperson M.S. Randhawa to mediapersons.

“We have filed a single FIR”, he said.

More than four dozen masked persons, some of them appearing to be women, wielding sledgehammer, stones, iron rods and sticks, attacked the students in their hostels as also professors who tried to protect students.

Around 40 students were injured, 20 of them with serious injuries, were admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh sustained injuries in her head as she was assaulted with an iron rod on her head.

JNUSU members alleged that the attackers were ABVP activists but the latter said that it was Left group students who assaulted them.

Social activist Yogendra Yadav, who reached the spot on coming to know of the incidents, was also manhandled. Yadav said the police was there but did nothing to stop the miscreants. He said that the police, instead, told him that he (Yadav) was creating tension.

Students and JNU faculty members alleged that police and university guards remained a mute spectator when the goons were attackning. They also accused them of letting the accused escape from the university.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit shah have spoken to Delhi police chief and Delhi Lieutenant Governor to get in touch with the JNU authorities and student representatives.
