NEW DELHI, JANUARY 12— A senior police officer in Kashmir, who is also winner of the President’s Medal for bravery, was on Saturday caught with two terrorists travelling in a vehicle on Srinagar-Jammu highway.

Identified as Davinder Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, posted at Srinagar International airport, was on his way to Delhi along with the arrested terrorists.

Davinder Singh was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry on August 15 last year.

The police also recovered an AK-47 rifle and two pistols from the Badami Bagh Cantonment residence of Davinder. One more Ak-47 rifle and a pistol were recovered from the possession-Naveed Babu-one of the two terrorists. He is said to be affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen. The other terrorist has been identified as Asif.

NDTV, quoting police sources, reported that Davinder and the two terrorists were on their way to Delhi.

However, their purpose of going to Delhi was not immediately known. It is also not clear if they wanted to do some terrorist activity in the national capital on the occasion of the Republic day on January 26.

Davinder Singh, according to sources, was absent from duty on Saturday and had applied for four days leave from Sunday.

Police sources said that investigations were on to find why they were going to Delhi with the help of a police officer.

According to police, Naveed Babu is accused of being involved in the killing of 11 non-local workers including truck drivers and labourers in South Kashmir in October and November last year. Babu carried out the killing of non-locals to target Kashmir’s apple industry after withdrawal of special status of Jammu and Kashmir by scrapping Article 370 on August 5, 2019.

According to police, Hizbul terrorist Naveed Babu is also a former Special Police Officer (SPO).

Davinder and the two terrorists were arrested by police while tracking the movement and phone calls of Babu. Police happened to find location of the three after Babu made phone call to his brother.

The police is reported to have recovered huge cache of arms in raids in South Kashmir after arrest of Davinder and the two terrorists.

Davinder Singh had come to limelight after Afzal Guru, who was given death sentence in Parliament attack case of 2001, had alleged that Davinder Singh had asked him to accompany a Parliament attack accused to Delhi and make arrangements for his stay in the national capital.
