HYDERABAD, FEBRUARY 18- The University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Tuesday issued a circular penalising three of its students for organising Shaheen Bagh event in the campus. The students were imposed a fine of Rs 5000 each for organising “Shaheen Bagh Night Event” on 31st January 2020 and painting graffiti on the walls at the North Shopping Complex of the University.

Faseeh Ahmad EK(PhD, the Department of Communications), Sahana Pradeep(PhD, Translation Studies) and AS Adish (MA English) are the students who were penalised by the University. Sources told India Tomorrow that the students were not even given show-cause notice and direct action was taken by the University. When contacted Faseeh and Adish told India Tomorrow they just came to know about the circular and would react later.

Terming the circular dangerous, Abhishek Nandan, President, Students Union of the University told India Tomorrow it is an act by the administration to stop the protests by putting pressure. ” We will discuss the issue and decide further action ” – He added.

The incident referred in the circular was a solidarity gathering to the protest going at the Shaheen Bagh area in New Delhi against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Asfaque, a post-graduate student of Urdu at the University, a witness to the controversial ‘Shaheen Bagh Night’ told India Tomorrow the protest gathering was organised by a Coordination Committee Against CAA , an umbrella organisation of around 13 organisations in the campus and had painting, art, music performance among others. He alleged that the administration is deliberately targeting Muslim voices in the University.

Ashfaque was earlier given show-cause notice with other 3 students for questioning the administration the demolition of Martyrs Wall erected in the campus in commemoration of the people who lost their lives during protests against CAA by the security staff in the dark.”There is an unusual presence of security staff and Police at the events organised in Muslim issues. Muslim student leaders are largely being targeted. Abdullah Azzam, a scholar and student leader was blocked by the security at the University gate when he was coming to address a gathering on Monday”- he added.

The University circular signed by registrar further warned students of any “recurrence of such incidents or indulge in any act of indiscipline, would have serious repercussion on their academic career with strong disciplinary action.”
