NEW DELHI, MARCH 16 – The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice in a petition seeking the preservation of video footage of the riots that broke out in North East Delhi last month. The petition also seeks a direction to not remove the debris from the riot sites without collecting evidence. Notice was issued to the Central Government, Delhi Government and Delhi Police by a Division Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar in the plea filed by the Jamiat Ulma-I-Hind.

Highlighting the need to have an impartial investigation into the case, the Petitioner has asked the court to constitute a Special Investigation Team, headed by a retired Supreme Court or Delhi High Court judge. It is demanded that members of the Delhi Police shall be excluded from this SIT.

The petitioner further seeks adequate compensation for the victims, similar to the compensation awarded to the victims of the 1984 riots. Prayers have also been made for the introduction of specific provisions under the Indian Penal Code for provocation of violence in specific cases and prohibiting incitement of hate. The matter would be heard next on March 27 reports Bar and Bench.
