HYDERABAD, MARCH 16 – Telangana State Legislative Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and also the National Population Register (NPR) in its present format. Resolution urging the Centre to amend the CAA to remove all references to any religion or country. It also expressed concern over the proposed implementation of the National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) which “may result in the exclusion of a large number of people”.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao moved the resolution in the Assembly on Monday. “In view of the apprehensions among a large section of people of India, the Legislative Assembly of Telangana urge the government of India to amend the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 in order to remove all references to any religion or to any foreign country,” the resolution said. The government said there were serious questions and valid concerns regarding the legality and constitutionality of the three exercises. It highlighted the confusion and genuine apprehension among the public.

Telangana Assembly is the seventh one in the series to oppose the CAA and NPR. Assemblies of Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Delhi and Bihar had earlier adopted similar resolutions.
“This House urges the government of Telangana to take all necessary steps to safeguard the people of Telangana from exercises such as NPR and NRC,” the resolution stated.

While the MIM and the Congress supported the resolution, the lone member of the BJP in the Assembly T Raja Singh tore a copy of the resolution, rushed to the Speaker’s podium and raised slogans against the TRS government for telling the “lies” to the Telangana people on CAA, NPR and NRC, reported The New Indian Express.
