IndiaTomorrow.net,
Hyderabad, Feb 10: Amid the ongoing nationwide protests seeking justice for Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula, Canadian Professor Marcello Musto has refused to visit Hyderabad University as Visiting Fellow this month. The academician has announced his decision in a letter to the university wherein he has supported the protests and rallies for justice to Rohith who committed suicide at the varsity in mid-January this year.

Musto, a professor of political science at York University in Canada, was invited by the political science department of Hyderabad University on 28 October 2015 for a series of lectures scheduled this February.

“last week I have heard of the tragic death of your PhD student Rohith Vemula and of the discriminatory policies taken on by your university, which has also arbitrarily suspended four other students, I agree with those who have argued that these acts have created the conditions of what has been defined an ‘institutional murder’,” he wrote in his letter dated 26th Jan. Rohith had committed suicide on 17th Jan.

Announcing cancellation of his trip, he wrote: “Under these circumstances, I would like to announce that I will not participate in any university activities that are not in genuine solidarity with this student strike.”

The Canadian professor has also supported all the protests and rallies being held over this issue.

“I fully support the protests and the rallies, which are taking place at your campus and that are quickly spreading all across the country,” he said.
