Alcohol is the biggest social evil which is affecting millions of families. Some Muslim families are also affected by it. We want complete ban on alcohol. The government should impose complete prohibition in the country

IndiaTomorrow.net,
New Delhi, May 02: Triple Talaq is a non-issue being blown out of proportion with political motives, said national women leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) while addressing a press conference here on Tuesday.

On the cry of media and government over Muslim Personal Laws, especially Triple Talaq and Polygamy, the women leaders categorically said that Islamic laws are divine and so can’t be changed by man. They, however, admitted that the Muslim community needs awareness and education about Muslim Personal Laws to check their misuse.

“We are setting up counselling centres and Shariah panchayats in different parts of the country to resolve family disputes, including divorce. We are also targeting 10 lakh mosques in the country in order to aware the Muslim masses about the teachings of Islam on family matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance etc.,” said Ms Atiya Siddiqua, All India Secretary, Women’s Department, JIH.

With an aim to educate and morally reform the Muslim society on personal laws on one hand and to remove misconceptions among the countrymen regarding divorce, polygamy etc. in Islam on the other, JIH has already launched a nationwide “Muslim Personal Law Awareness Campaign”. The 15-day campaign was launched in 23 state capitals on 23rd April. The national campaign will conclude on 7th May.

Asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advice to Muslims not to politicize the issue of Triple Talaq, she said: “We all are seeing who is politicizing it. They should stop that. We want zero divorce and that is why we are running this nationwide campaign.”

“Muslims are being maligned and media projecting them in bad light. We want to improve our image,” she said.

On polygamy, she said: “There is wisdom behind provision for polygamy in Islam. It is a provision for rehabilitation of widows and divorcees, used in specific circumstances. Islam wants men to take women with dignity. In some other communities, women are used and deserted. Islam allows polygamy only when one can do justice with all his wives.”

She stressed that poor Muslim women becoming victim of misuse of any personal law must be ensured justice. She demanded the All India Muslim Personal Law Board to work on that front.

“Islam sets up Shariah Court to ensure justice in the society. All India Muslim Personal Law Board should reform the system of Darul Qaza to ensure justice to victims,” she said.

Ms Siddiqua was accompanied by Ms Shaista Rafat, In-charge, Women’s Department, JIH Delhi & Haryana.

On Triple Talaq, Ms Rafat said: “It’s a non-issue being blown out of proportion. Islamic laws are not made by man and so can’t be changed. Misuse of a law doesn’t warrant its revocation. These are divine laws and no one has right to change them.”

In the context of the recent Supreme Court order criticising the Central government for not caring for the widows in Vrindavan and Mathura, she said Islam has provisions for rehabilitation of widows.

“Islam allows widows to get remarried. Daughter remains daughter of parents even after marriage, divorce or widowhood. In absence of parents, uncles and brothers can take responsibility. That is why there are fewer widows among Muslims as per Census 2011,” said Ms Rafat.

These Muslim women leaders said they want the government to care about the basic and major issues of Muslim women.

“We demand special measures for education of Muslim girls – particularly those living in slums and villages and higher education facilities also for Muslim women. Government should create opportunities to promote entrepreneurship among Muslim women,” said Ms Siddiqua.

They also demanded complete prohibition in the country.

“Alcohol is the biggest social evil which is affecting millions of families. Some Muslim families are also affected by it. We want complete ban on alcohol. The government should impose complete prohibition in the country,” she demanded.
