New Delhi, Aug 14: An association of resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS in Delhi has condemned the sacking of Dr Kafeel Khan of BRD Medical College and Hospital by the Uttar Pradesh government of Yogi Adityanath.

Dr. Harjit Singh Bhatti, head of the AIIMS doctors’ association, has said that “Doctors are being made scapegoats.” According to a report in NDTV, Bhatti’s association has written a letter condemning Dr Kafeel Khan’s sacking. Paediatrician Dr Khan, who was reportedly head of the paediatrics and the children’s encephalitis wards at the Gorakhpur hospital, was sacked after Adityanath visited the hospital on Sunday.

“By blaming doctors for the death of the children, politicians are hiding their incompetency. Who is responsible if oxygen, gloves, equipment not available,” Dr Bhatti has been quoted as saying.

He further said: “We are not saying that the doctor can’t be responsible, but he’s not the only one responsible. We want a proper enquiry, government officials are also involved and even they should be held accountable. Not just a single doctor.”

In the last one week, more than 60 children have died at the hospital.

Ironically, Dr Khan was sacked day after he was praised by entire media for his heroic deed to save the children at the Gorakhpur hospital.

Head of the hospital Dr Rajeev Mishra was suspended on Saturday. Media reports say that he has resigned after his suspension.
