HYDERABAD—Cadres of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) and Students Islamic Organisation of India(SIO) have done a yeoman’s service in providing relief and rescue services to the flood affected people of Warangal district in Telangana. They also worked with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and police team to rescue people from areas submerged under water.
Telangana experienced one of the heaviest rains during the last few days, resulting in severe damage in several districts. Incessant torrential rainfall led to flooding, loss of life, damage to properties and displacements.
Warangal and Mulugu are among the worst-hit districts by floods that occurred due to torrential rains in the state on July 27.
According to state government’s official sources, as many as 23 people have died due to floods till Saturday, 14 of them in Mulugu district alone. Of 14 killed in Mulugu district, 8 were residents of Kondai village alone. Sources say that toll could be higher when flood water recedes and more bodies are found.
Over 30,000 were displaced from areas flooded by heavy rains all over the state. They have been shifted to safer areas by the administration, assisted by social organisations.
Apart from providing foods and clothing to flood-hit people, JIH and SIO also took part in rescue operations by taking people out of the localities submerged under flood water and shift them to safer places. JIH and SIO volunteers, who did not have proper boats, used tubes for rescue operations. SIO formed a rescue team, with its emergency phone number 7288957299 shared on social media to enable to call them in case any one requires emergency help.
According to JIH Warangal Urban and Rural unit president Abdul Hannan, the worst-affected areas of Warangal were Naimnagar, Ramnagar, Kakatiya Phase 2 Colony, Hunter Road, Shivanagar and Nehru Nagar. SIO and JIH were actively engaged in relief and rescue operations in these areas.
SIO Warangal City president Hafiz Faheemuddin said that his cadres ventured in 8-feet deep waters and rescued a woman who had given birth to a child just eight days ago.
Additionally, JIH and SIO actively collaborated with the police, transferring emergency calls for help to the appropriate authorities. For instance, when around 100 to 150 girls were trapped at the Vaagdevi hostel in Naimnagar, they swiftly coordinated with the police and the district collector, resulting in a successful rescue operation.
