Ayodha, Uttar Pradesh, 11 Jan 2014: Noted peace activist and priest Yugal Kishore Shashtri was arrested here today afternoon (11 Jan) by the Uttar Pradesh Police. On 12 Jan, he was going to orgainse a People’s Panchayat on the isuue of attack on the shrine of Prophet Shees. The shrine was attacked on 20 Dec 2013, in which a student Zeeshan was also kelled. The Police has arrested Sashtri claiming he is ‘threat to peace and order’ in the city.
According to his close aide and local activist, Shah Alam, the arrest is result of his sustained campaign to expose the communal elements involved in the attack on the shrine and murder of Syed Zeeshan alias Danish. “This shows the communal nature of police and adminstration,” said Alam. “The role of police and local adminstration has been very doubtful since the beginging of the investigation,” he added.
Rights groups and activists have condemed the arrest and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.
