New Delhi, 21 April 2014: All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, the umbrella body of Indian Muslim organizations, on Monday strongly criticized the Election Commission of India for “playing partisan politics by removing the ban on Amit Shah while retaining the same in the case of Azam Khan.”

Alleging that the EC is not taking action against BJP and RSS leaders for their hate speeches, Mushawarat has appealed to the Supreme Court of India to intervene. Mushawarat president Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan today wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India in this regard.

Mushawarat, which has representation of all major Muslim organizations, has appealed to the Supreme Court three days after a BJP leader Giriraj Singh stated that opponents of Narendra Modi will have no place in India, they will have to go to Pakistan. The Election Commission has not taken any action against Singh so far.

In a statement, Dr. Khan said: “The Election Commission of India is playing partisan politics by removing the ban on Amit Shah while retaining the same in the case of Azam Khan.”

He also said: “The Election Commission has also failed to take action against umpteen BJP leaders who have crossed all limits during the current electoral campaign, like Giriraj Singh saying that “opponents of Modi will be sent to Pakistan” or Vasundra Raje saying “we will see who is cut to pieces after the election,” or Nitin Gadkari saying that “casteism is in the DNA of Bihar” or Parveen Togadia saying that Muslims will be expelled to Pakistan and reminding them of Muzaffarnagar, Khokhrajhar and Gujarat 2002, etc. etc.”

Dr. Khan, who is also Editor of an English language fortnightly The Milli Gazette, alleged that the Election Commission has “developed cold feet to tackle the BJP-RSS hate juggernaut.”

Therefore, he said, the Supreme Court of India should “take suo motto notice by appointing an SIT to probe the hatemongering by Sangh Parivar people during the current election campaign and bring the culprits to book.”
