New Delhi, 26 May 2014: It was perhaps first time that during the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister of India, religious slogans were made. Just before Narendra Modi took oath as PM at 6 PM today (Monday), a good number of people from the audience raised the slogan of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’

When President Pranab Mukherjee came up, as tradition, the National Anthem was sounded. But as soon as the anthem ended, the slogans like Jai Shri Ram and Bharat Mata Ki Jai which are generally regarded as Hindutva slogans were raised by BJP leaders.

It is the Jai Shri Ram slogan which had resonated the entire country during the BJP’s Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the early 1990s – the movement ended at the demolition of the 15th century Babri Masjid in Ayodhya town of Uttar Pradesh.

Besides Modi, 44 members of his cabinet including BJP president Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitely and Najma Hebtullah also took oath.
