New Delhi, 11 Sep 2014: Thanks to some of his controversial provocative speeches and statements, Lok Sabha Member Yogi Adityanath (BJP) of Gorakhpur is a household name today. A look at his election affidavits reveals some interesting information about the three-time MP of Bharatiya Janata Party from Uttar Pradesh.

The 41-year-old saint-turned-politician is one of very few members of Indian Parliament who has no liabilities and no dependents and whose only declared source of income is salary and allowances from the parliament.

As per myneta.info, the website of National Election Watch and Association For Democratic Reforms, the civil groups which collect information about lawmakers and candidates from their official election affidavits, the wealth of Adityanath has taken three-fold growth every five years since 2004.

As per his 2004 Lok Sabha election affidavit, he had assets worth Rs 9 lakh which grew to Rs 21 lakh in the 2009 election. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls held in April-May, he declared assets worth Rs 72 lakh – half of which in the form of three vehicles.

A science graduate from H. N. Bahuguna Garhwal University (Uttarakhand), Adityanath has no residential building, no commercial building and no agricultural or non-agricultural land. But he has three vehicles – Tata Safari worth Rs 3 lakh, Innova (Rs 12 lakh) and New Fortuner (Rs 21 lakh).

For his controversial speech at an election meeting in Noida on 7th Sep 2014, he was served a notice by the Election Commission of India on 9th Sep. The EC today reprimanded him for violating the Model Code of Conduct after going through his reply filed yesterday evening. In the 2014 election affidativit he had declared three criminal cases pending against him in court.

Many politicians in the past including Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan have been reprimanded and even banned from public speech following their provocative statements and speeches. However, it seems the EC or election laws are not much successful in curbing hate speech by politicians.
