NEW DELHI—Freelance journalist Prashant Kanojia, who was arrested in August last year in connection with a tweet that UP police interpreted to be a threat to law and order, was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court today. Kanojia belongs to the Dalit community.
The news of the bail was shared by Kanojia’s wife Jagisha Arora on her Facebook page.
She said that while Prashant has been granted bail by the high court, he will be released tomorrow.
“Prashant has got bail from the high court. My faith in judiciary and Baba Saheb’s Constitution has got me results. I want to express thanks to everyone who supported me in the fight. Thanks to all”, Jagisha wrote on her Facebook Page.
According to an FIR registered by the Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow on August 17, 2019, Prashant Kanjia had tweeted and whatsapped a material taken from the Facebook post of Sushil Tiwari of the Hindu Army.
The FIR stated that Kanojia had morphed a Facebook post of Sushil Tiwari with an intention to defame Tiwari but it also intended to create law and order problem.
“It is Tiwari ji’s direction that entry for SC/ST/OBC be banned in the ram Mandir and everybody should raise their voice for this”, Kanojia was alleged to have tweeted.
The police said in the FIR that such post could result in disturbing communal harmony and create tension between different communities and threaten law and order.
