New Delhi, 13 Feb 2014: Today’s incident of Lok Sahba has earned condemnation from all quarters – political as well as non-political. As soon as Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde introduced Telangana bill, expelled Congress MP L Rajagopal reportedly came into the well and started using pepper spray while TDP MP Venugopal Reddy allegedly brandished a knife inside the Lok Sabha, which he later denied. At least four MPs suffered injuries because of the spray and they were rushed to hospital.

BJP leader Arun Jaitley said the incident has given a bad name to Indian democracy. He termed the incident as a “theatre of the absurd”.

“What has happened in Parliament has brought a bad name to Indian democracy….The Congress alone is responsible for bringing a bad name to Indian democracy,” he said.

While expressing concern over the uncivilized, violent, immoral and illegal actions of some Members inside Lok Sabha, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind condemned the incident and demanded the government to take stern legal action against the guilty after assessing the whole incident impartially and fairly.

Mr. Nusrat Ali, General Secretary, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said that though it is known that several Members of Parliament and assemblies have criminal records; yet “it is not expected that these members, rather than putting their viewpoints with logics and in a civilized way, would resort to such methods which tarnish the prestige of parliament.”

He termed the incident as shameful and terrorising and asked parties and people to consider good lifestyle, good conduct and high moral behaviour as parameters to elect candidates.

In his reaction, Dr Tasleem Rahmani, president Muslim Political Council of India said: “I am really ashemed and sad today for this kind of attack on parliament. This poses a threat to whole system of our parliamentary democracy, constitution and independence. Are we being pushed towards anarchy?”

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar took the incident seriously and suspended 18 MPs from Andhra Pradesh for rest of the session. Ms. Kumar announced the decision soon after the House met at 2 pm after being adjourned in the wake of the incident.
