Eid Get-Together: JIH chief calls for unity, brotherhood in India, solidarity with Palestine

NEW DELHI—Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) hosted an Eid get-together programme at the India International Centre in the national capital last evening. The event was attended by foreign diplomats, interfaith leaders, community leaders, activists, politicians, journalists, and scholars.

Addressing the gathering, JIH President Syed Sadatullah Husaini extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and guests on the auspicious occasion of Eid. “We try to join our deprived and poor people of the society in our joys on this occasion of Eid celebration,” he said.

Emphasizing the importance of social responsibility during Eid celebrations, he urged everyone to remember the underprivileged and work towards a more just and equitable society. Mr. Husaini stated, “We all in this country together make efforts for establishing peace, justice, equality and brotherhood and for granting rights and progress to every citizen”. 

Calling for reviving the commitment to make India an abode of peace and amity, the JIH chief expressed concern over persecution and oppression across the world, especially in Palestine where he said Palestinians are facing the “worst persecution in the history of the world.”

Expressing solidarity with the Palestinians facing persecution, he highlighted the ongoing struggles of Palestinians and called for a united front against oppression and exploitation worldwide. “It is our responsibility to do united struggle against all types of persecutions and exploitations. I hope that like in the past, you will cooperate in the future too in this regard,” Mr. Husaini said.

Explaining the significance of Eid-ul-Fitr, he said it is celebrated at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, when the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). “Ramadan is the month in which Muslims make efforts to follow the Quran and attain spiritual height,” he added.

The JIH leader stated that Eid-ul-Fitr represents the basic message of Islam: That all humans are creatures and servants of one God and brothers to each other. “We announce on the occasion of Eid that we have to live together as brothers and should together obey the one God, the Creator,” he said.

The Eid get-together witnessed a diverse gathering of dignitaries from various fields. Among the foreign diplomats present were Iranian Ambassador Dr. Iraj Ilahi, Palestinian Ambassador Adnan Alhaija, Mr. Tariq Masroof, Second Secretary at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and Ahmedt Yildiz, counsellor, Embassy of the Republic of Turkiye. Senior diplomats and counsellors from the USA, Russia, France, Germany, Turkey, Pakistan, Algeria, Indonesia, Libya, Malaysia, and Brunei also attended the event.

Several prominent Indian personalities graced the occasion, including Goswami Sushil Maharaj, founder of Dharma Sansad, Dr. John Dayal, General Secretary of the All India Christian Council, and human rights activist Ravi Nair. Maulana Asghar Ali Imam Mehdi, President of Jamiat Ahle Hadith, and Maulana Mohammed Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, General Secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), were also present.

Retired Justice Abhay Thipsay from the Bombay and Allahabad High Courts, Supreme Court advocates Huzaifa Ahmadi, Sanjay Hegde, Fuzail Ahmed Ayubi, M R Shamshad and Advocate Shahrukh Alam attended the gathering.

Notable personalities included former Chief Election Commissioner of India S.Y. Quraishi, former ambassador and ex-foreign secretary Prof. Muchkund Dubey, writer and journalist Farah Naqvi, Prof. Apoorvanand Jha, Prof. Pradeep Mathur, activist Roma Malik, Member of Parliament Javed Ali Khan, former Delhi minister and AAP MLA Rajendra Pal Gautam, MLA Haji Yunus and former MP Shahid Siddiqi.

The event was also attended by veteran journalists such as Gautam Lahiri (President, Press Club of India), Jai Shankar Gupta (Press Council of India), Binny Yadav (Women Press Corps), Vinay Kumar (former General Secretary, PCI), Shivaji Sarkar, Satish Mishra, Aditya Menon (The Quint), Mohua Chatterjee (Times of India), Manan K. (DNA), Dhirendra Jha (Caravan), Prashant Tandon, Anil Chamaria, Shruti Sharma, Maroof Raza.

Other guests included Dr. SQR Ilyas, Welfare Party of India President, former bureaucrat Hasib Ahmed, Prof. Akhtarul Wasey, writer Feroz Bakht Ahmed, Dr. Zafar Mahmood, Masoom Moradabadi, Dr. Tasleem Rahmani, and women representatives from Brahma Kumari Ashram.

The event saw participation from JIH including its Vice Presidents Prof. Salim Engineer, Maulana Waliullah Saeedi Falahi, Malik Motasim Khan and JIH Secretary General T. Arif Ali, and national secretaries Mohammad Shafi Madani, Mohammad Ahmed, and several others.
