Judicial enquiry into Dhule riot begins

Dhule (Maharashtra), 06 April 2014: The Maharashtra state government-appointed Justice Shrikant Malte Commission on Sunday began its probe into the Dhule riots of last year in the presence of representatives of Jamiat Ulema Maharashtra (Arshad Madani) and social workers.

The secretary of the commission asked lawyers of the concerned parties to submit.

In Jan 2013, at least seven Muslims were killed in police firing during the communal riot in Dhule and over 100 others were wounded. Besides, shops and houses were looted and burnt.

On behalf of Jamiat, Advocates Neyaz Ahmed, Nehal Ahmed Ansari, Shahid Nadeem Ansari, Irfana Hamdani and SM Hanafi appeared before the commission.

The commission informed that it has so far received affidavits from 417 people.

The government had appointed the commission in March 2013.
