New Delhi, 10 April 2014: Following his controversial statement made by Samajwadi Party leader, Mulayam Singh Yadav showing leniency to rapists, civil-rights activist Shehzad Poonawalla has written to the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate action against Yadav.

In his letter to both the NCW and ECI, Poonawalla has sought “immediate action to be taken against Mulayam Yadav for statements backing rapists and rape.” He termed Yadav’s statement to be “outrageously sexist, illegal & objectionable.”

The leader of Samajwadi Party caused quite a controversy at his rally in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh on 10th April when he said that rapists should not be punished with hanging since “They are boys, they make mistakes.”
