28,313 online fraud cases reported in last three years

New Delhi, 06 August 2014: During the last three years there have been some 28,313 cases of online fraud that have been report in the country in which about Rs.183 crore were lost, Minister of State of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman informed Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

While answering a written question, she said that the Reserve Bank of India initiated several measures to prevent frauds related to Credit / ATM / Debit Cards & Internet Banking.

As far as the number of crimes is concerned, in the financial year 2011-12 some 10,048 cases of online fraud were reported which declined to 8,765 in 2012-13 but went up to 9,500 in 2013-14 The amount lost in these frauds increased to double fold from 2011-12 to 2013-14. In 2011-12 some Rs.38 crore was lost due to online fraud which went up to Rs.67 crore in 2012-13 and Rs.78.01 crore in 2013-14 respectively.

Most cases were of credit card frauds. In these three years, 23,680 credit card fraud cases were reported. 2,830 ATM / debit card frauds and 1803 online banking frauds involved fraud cases were reported in these three years.
