New Delhi, 16 Sep 2014: The Bharatiya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lost huge ground not just in Uttar Pradesh – where its leaders had run aggressive hate campaign in run up to this election – but also in Gujarat and Rajasthan where the party had swept in the Lok Sabha polls in May this year. BJP had got huge victory in Uttar Pradesh also (71 out 80 seats) in the Lok Sabha polls.

The message from the by-poll results announced today is bold and clear: People want development, not hate campaign. People want livelihood and employment, not communal riots.

Out of 33 assembly seats that went to poll on 13th Sep in nine states, BJP is leading only on 13 with the loss of 13 seats. Congress is making good comeback in Rajasthan and Gujarat as it is leading on 7 seats with a gain of 5. Samajwadi Party has retained huge lost ground in Uttar Pradesh as the party has almost won 8 out of 11 seats with a gain of 7 seats – all at the cost of BJP’s loss. BJP had won all 11 seats in last poll.

BJP has lost in it bastion Gujarat also. Out of nine seats that went to poll, the party could win only 6 and lost 3 to Congress. Also in Rajasthan, out of 4 seats that BJP won in last poll, it lost 3 to Congress this time and could retain just one. BJP is ruling in both Gujarat and Rajasthan.

In the assembly bypoll for 18 seats that were held in August this year, BJP had lost 6 seats and it could win only 10 seats.

In the Lok Sabha elections held in April-May this year, BJP had swept Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, BJP had won 71 seats.

However, in a little over three months, picture has changed so much so that BJP could not save the Rohaniya seat that falls under Varanasi Lok Sabha seat which Modi had won with a huge margin. Not only this, the party could not save the Charkhari assembly seat which cabinet miniser and firebrand BJP leader Uma Bharti had vacated after winning the Lok Sabha poll.
