17 SIMI suspects acquitted by Hubli court after 7 years in jail

New Delhi/ Hubli, 30 April 2015: In a major setback to the Karnataka police, a local court in Hubli district on Thursday acquitted 17 alleged SIMI men who were facing terror charges and were behind bar since 2008.

Additional District Session Judge Gopalakrishna Kolli in Hubli acquitted all 17 men for lack of evidence.

Karnataka Police had arrested them from various parts of the state and claimed that they were part of terror sleeper cell and allegedly recovered large amount of explosives and detonators.

At the time of arrest some accused were students of the prestigious Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

The court found that the prosecution has failed to prove the case against these accused and acquitted them for the lack of evidences.
