New Delhi, 22 July 2015: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday exempted two Muslim girls from the CBSE dress code for All India Pre-Medical Test due on 25th July. The CBSE on 9th July had issued strict measures including a dress code to ensure fair AIPMT. The dress code had barred scarf and full-sleeve kurta among other things, and this had made several Muslim women candidates angry.

Even though the CBSE dress code did not mention Hijab, Muslim women candidates took the ban on scarf and full-sleeve kurta as restriction on the Hijab. IndiaTomorrow.net was the first media outlet to break the story.

The CBSE notification no. 3282 dated 9th July 2015 banned items which are normally banned in examinations, but it also banned scarf. The banned items included mobile, calculator, camera, hair pin, hair band, charm/tabeez belts, cap, scarf etc.

The notification also carried a dress code for the AIPMT 2015 candidates:
“The candidates will observe the following dress code while coming for appearing in AIPMT Examination: a) Wear light clothes with half sleeves Shirt/T-Shirt/Kurta not having big buttons, brooch or any badge, flower and Trouser/Salwar etc. b) Wear open slippers and not the shoes,” it said.

While allowing the two Muslim girls petitioners to wear a headscarf and a full-sleeve dress for the July 25 AIPMT, the Kerala HC in its order on Tuesday asked them to present themselves for thorough checking before and during the exam.

Asiya Abdul Kareem from Kozhikode and Nadha Rahim from Palakkad had filed the petition in the Kerala High Court on 17th July.
